FDSO offers an integrated platform for dataset reallocation, migration,
compression, space release and expansion, directory management, and catalog
management. Installations can maximize returns on their investment in
DASD by using FDSO's powerful selection language to locate over-allocated,
under-used, or misplaced datasets and adjust them to installation standards.
Listed below are just a few of the ways that
FDSO can improve the efficiency, reliability, and productivity of any MVS
data center.
- Data set maintenance, including the reallocation
of VSAM and non-VSAM files to relocate data sets, defragment individual
data sets or DASD pools, release unused space, and convert to or from
SMS.
- Non-intrusive defrag incrementally reclaims wasted
space on an active volume without locking out other access to the volume.
- Comprehensive and easy-to-read reports, providing
individual data set information, catalog display and error checking,
standard and custom reports.
- Customizable Executive Information reports from
either host-based report writers or workstation-based graphical display
packages.
- Standards enforcement, including exception reporting
and correction for data set naming, size, placement, and utilization.
- Enterprise-wide PDS management, offering verification,
compression, and directory block optimization.
- Catalog and volume maintenance, including extensive
catalog error checking and diagnosis, catalog- and volume-level “scratch”
functions, and the ability to uncatalog and recatalog data sets.

FDSO’s
powerful selection facility and high-speed performance allow an installation
to perform tasks not easily accomplished, or even possible, with other products.
For example, an installation could establish FDSO jobstreams to:
- Compress all PDSs on all online DASD volumes
and ensure that they have at least 20% free space and 10% free directory
blocks before running the nightly update jobs.
- Reallocate all data sets belonging to a specified
SMS data class that have gone into multiple extents.
- Ensure that all SMP/E data sets have at least
25% free space before installing maintenance.
- Scratch and uncatalog all permanent data sets
from system work volumes on a nightly basis.
- Report the names of all data sets that reside
on TSO volumes and either use less than 20% of their allocated space
or have not been referenced within the last year.
- Redefine all VSAM data sets residing on a specified
range of volumes that have had more than 50% of their CAs split.
- Identify data sets that do not meet installation
naming or allocation specifications and create an extract data set that
can be easily downloaded for use in a PC-based executive information
system. FDSO can also be used to replace older, less efficient DASD
utilities, yielding savings on monthly maintenance costs while increasing
functionality.
- RVA Free Disk Array Space Release
- Reporting availability for datasets with errors
- Added enhancements to existing ACTION set
- Performance Enhancements
- Expanded message set
